Working of Li-Fi Technology
Light, even though being an electromagnetic wave like radio waves, can transmit data ten thousand times faster. This technology uses an LED light bulb to generate signals by flickering it on and off. The technology focuses on making sure that the light bulb is flickered up to billions of times a second which makes it unnoticeable to human eyes. This flickering generates almost ten thousand times the speed of an average Wi-Fi. This technology is thus named Li-Fi, which is a VLC, visible light communication, technology developed by a team of scientists including Dr Gordon Povey, Prof. Harald Haas and Dr Mostafa Afgani at the University of Edinburgh. In simple terms, Li-Fi can be thought of as a light-based Wi-Fi.
Li-Fi has its own set of advantages:
1. Light is used everywhere and can be used even at the places where radio frequency communication is a problem, such as aircrafts or hospitals.
2. It is focused in providing connectivity at very high speeds as compared to normal Wi-Fi speed.
3. It solves the problem of additional cables and wires that needs to be laid from one access point to another.
4. Li-Fi could be used to beam the information directly to the destination.
Even if a technology provides such benefits, it also gets accompanied by some disadvantages. The problem faced by Li-Fi is that it cannot penetrate the walls. So it needs light present on the other side of the wall. When beam is used to transfer information, it gets exposed to the weather conditions and gets obstructed in heavy fog or snow.
But the benefits and especially the speed outweighs any other disadvantage tied to this technology. But as discussed, any technology stays in demand as long as another better version comes in the market. And this field experiences a constant innovation and modification.
